Befriending Grace

I received a wonderful message from a gentleman after the posting of my blog on Grace. In it he said, “I have a question for you, it is easy to feel Grace once or maybe twice, but what is the mantra to enjoy it continuously?”

I’d like to answer this question here, drawing from my own experience and also from some experienced contributions from Eckhart Tolle in related reference.

God reality as contained energy (as I like to describe G.R.A.C.E.) is experiencing life, within and without, through a heightened awareness of the now… moment by no-thought moment. It is a deep deep deep sense of knowing an unquestionable, unchanging, liberating, beautiful, pure truth about oneself and life. Some people happen to experience this momentarily (as mentioned in the Grace blog) and then pay no mind to it… allowing the mind to continue its unaware patterns that lead to all kinds of random, confusing emotions and actions. But to recognize grace and then ask what the gentleman who wrote me asked is a profound moment in ones life.

As we move about in our physical world, we have habituated ourselves to relying on our controlling powers to get things done. We have rarely relied on our spiritual powers to move ahead in life. The spiritual power in us is our soul energy, the same energy most of us acknowledge as leaving the physical body once death occurs. We however almost never acknowledge this energy when we are alive. If it is powerful enough to leave us as a lifeless shell in death, why do we not acknowledge its powerful capabilities when we are alive? This soul energy, source of life power, is a very real energy that contains the wisdom, guiding light, knowledge, power and clarity that we are looking for in our outer world of rules and regulations and responses. We neglect this source of our highest understanding, our compass, by not making the disciplined and daily silent time to connect to it… to pay attention to it and thus empower ourselves by aligning ourselves with it. The reason I bring this up in a discussion about experiencing grace more deliberately is because I believe it is through our deliberate attention to our God reality as contained energy that we can experience our God reality as contained energy. (Yes you read correctly.) The fact is that anything we want to experience in our life, we have to give our conscious attention and energy to. ANYTHING. If you want to experience a good physique, you give the required conscious attention and energy to your physique. If you want to experience the love of your child, you give the required conscious attention and energy to loving your child. If you want to experience a deep meaningful relationship, you give the required conscious attention and energy to deepening the relationship. If you want to experience love, you give the required conscious attention and energy to loving. If you want to experience good health, you give the required conscious attention and energy to your health needs. You see where I’m going. So it is naturally difficult or unclear to understand how to use our inner power if we haven’t given conscious attention and energy to it.

So, how does one experience grace more deliberately? The answer to the gentleman’s question is: Discipline yourself to experience it once you realize the importance of your spirit reality in this lifetime… pay attention to the now and make yourself a ready, pure, open, receptive, awake, conscious, and available platform to experiencing grace. Give the required attention and energy to where it is in you… in the present moment… in the now. Remain alert and awake rather than caught up in past projections of worry, stress or pain. Allow for it by creating the space for it in your life… by looking in its direction… in the now… within and around you.

In my last blog on meditation, I mentioned the technique of silent meditation by focusing in the now. The now is where your divinity resides… where grace is experienced.

Eckhart Tolle, author of The Power of Now, says:

When your attention moves into the now, there is an alertness. It is as if you are waking up from a dream of thought. The dream of past and future. [Here is] clarity, simplicity, no room for problem making. Just this moment as it is. There is a sacredness in everything you perceive in the now. Do not confuse the now with what happens in it. It is deeper. It is the space in which things happen. The content has arisen in it. Your innermost sense of I am has nothing to do with the content that has arrived in it. That sense of I Am is one with now. It always remains the same.

And when we align ourselves and feel our truth in this now, in this presence, we are capable of amazing experiences within and without.

There are nourishing things in this world that also move us to feel grace’s presence in them, such as, various types of music, a walk through nature, a viewing of beautiful landscape, some paintings, writings, and several other offerings… and they will be present for your noticing if you ask to experience them. Be consistent in your wanting (which is more and more possible when you are increasingly aware of the mind’s sabotaging games in negative thinking and thus able to compassionately change them.) Expose yourself to these nourishing sources more often. They will serve as supplements in your training of the mind. And remove yourself from sources of the opposite of what you want to experience until you are internally strong enough to not have them negatively affect you – so you can allow them to just be without any need for tolerance or disapproval — which you will be capable of with soul empowerment through disciplined meditation and the accumulation and application of pure knowledge.

If we want to experience the magnificence of grace and her lasting affects more consistently, we must give conscious attention to her existence within us. The over-active mind or ego will not allow for it, so we have to put in the conscious and disciplined attention and energy to gain control of our mind (15 minutes of effort in focusing on now every morning and then pulling yourself into present moment awareness for brief moments every now and then throughout the day). If the quality of our life is important enough to us and if we are willing to try what we haven’t when we are beckoned from within, then we will. Your efforts in meditation will increasingly provide you with the skills to be present in the now and this will result in the clearing of mental blockages through a natural process of healing and cleansing… which is deliverance. This will transform you through your (deep) spirit self realization. We can then, increasingly and intentionally, become available to know and experience grace in our only real time on this planet… in every conscious now.
