He is called Bollywood’s original dancing star. His ‘light on the feet’ style was a rave in the 80’s and early 90’s, yet the one title this Disco Dancer holds close to heart is that of a Grandmaster. Here, the Guru of ‘Dance India Dance’ show for the past three consecutive years, Mithunda, as he is lovingly called, talks about his biggest claim to fame and love: dancing.
Year three in ‘Dance India Dance’
‘Dance India Dance’ (‘DID’) never stands for victories or failures; this show is about obsession, and the willingness to surpass as a good dancer. I started my career as a struggling dancer and looking back, I think ‘DID’ is and will remain very close to my heart. I am sure ‘DID’ will bring smiles on the faces of many more participants. The show being one of a kind has sustained its reality. And with the blessings of the almighty, ‘DID 3’ will also go down in history books as yet another entertaining season.
Dancing today has changed completely. I feel that today dancers are much more gifted than we were. They can cope up with any form of dancing style, and learn so many different dancing techniques. It is remarkable.
The industry today
Bollywood today has some amazing dancers. Hrithik Roshan is a magnificent dancer. Shahid Kapoor also dances quite well. They have all the dancing potentials in them and have proved it time and again.
Western over classical dancing
Classical dance forms are the foundation of every dance. Yes, youth today choose the Western style of dancing over Indian classical, but fret not as Indian dance overrules all other forms of dancing styles. Also, learning a dance form is a matter of choice, but there are some youngsters who love Indian classical dancing too.
Dance reality shows – boon or bane
Dance shows are a huge platform for the talented lot. We never hadsuch facilities during our heyday. Whenever we wanted to show our talent, we had to do so by dancing at various hotels. Back then, I used to ask them if they would give lunch as we didn’t know when and where we would get food to eat.
A dancing star is…
It’s hard to comment on something like this as I think every dancer is a star in his own right. And we should give full respect to them. For me, people who dance in spite of physical challenges are the real winners.
