‘Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu’ movie review

There were great expectations from Karan Johar after Agneepath……afsos, yeh ho na saka aur ab yeh aalam hai………

The Shakun Batra directed Ek Main Aur Ek Tu….is inspired from the basic concept of ‘What happens in Vegas’…..but that is  where the similarity ends. The issue of getting married under a drunken stupor in Las Vegas is the basic funda of the film.

This film though has its heart in the right place, it doesn’t seem to have its brains anywhere!

Imraan Khan, after ‘I Hate Luv Stories’, was criticized for his limited expressions in ‘Break Ke Baad’,  but salvaged a great deal in ‘Delhi Belly’. He has been offered a role which has no characterisation at all. It is completely uni-dimensional and hence fails to engage the viewer in any kind of feeling towards his character. I am not saying Imran does a completely bad job. There are a couple of scenes where he does shine. The restaurant scene with his girlfriend, his outburst during the dinner table to name a few. But if see, there is hardly any more than that in the film.

Coming to Kareena, after starring with Salman and Shahrukh in the past few months back to back, she now looks old in front of Imran. For me her role just comes across as an extension of her role in Jab We Met. Only instead of the ‘sikhni from Bhatinda’ its the hair stylist from Vegas. I was just expecting her to say ‘koi doubt mat rakhna’.

The music, completely situational, comes across as the background score from one of the American rom coms. But besides the title song, the rest come across as a drag on the already slow screenplay.

Performances by Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak Shah seem forced and over the top. Boman can get away with the fact that he is shown as a stern demanding father, but Ratna does not seem to be having any emotional connect with her son whatsoever. Cameo  by Ram Kapoor comes across as more entertaining.

Story & Screenplay by Ayesha Devitre & Shakun Batra is to be blamed completely. The film drags post the first 15 minutes. Then it is such a dull affair, you don’t even remember the interval point, which if you compare with the recently released Agneepath, was a high impact point in the film!

Shakun Batra, fails in another point and that is in managing to extract competent performances by any of the cast. The only thing which appeals to you is the ending, pun intended!

What should you do, avoid it…..
