There was a time he was known as actress Ameesha Patel’s brother or at most the guy who kissed actress Riya Sen in an MMS. Meet Ashmit Patel, the guy who proved to be unlucky in films has slowly made his way as TV’s favourite love guru, while he hosted ‘Superstud: The School of Flirt’. Here, the stud shares some of his best learnt lessons on love, relationships and everything sweet.

Do you believe in true relationship?
Yes, I do! We can’t live without having a relation. I share a good relation with everyone in my life, be it my friend, mom or sister.

Are you in a relationship right now?
No, not yet! I haven’t met anyone.

Is all well between you and your sister Ameesha?
There has never been anything wrong between us. I still love and share everything with my darling sister, Ameesha.

As brother what you think about Ameesha’s marriage?
(Smiles) Why not? But still it is my sister’s life and she is in charge of it. Her decision is very important for all of us.

Are you satisfied with your career?
I’m satisfied with my life. I feel we need to be happy with whatever the almighty has bestowed upon us.

After ‘Murder’ you haven’t had any good films. Do you regret your decisions of choosing wrong films?
Whatever I do, it is my decision. And definitely I got so many movies. For me, all were best.

Veena Malik…
She is my good friend. Why people and media create unnecessary stories and link ups, I still fail to understand. We never were into a relationship and have always treated each other as good friends.

Do you think she is using your name just for publicity?
No, it’s nothing like that. Whatever happened, it’s her decision.

This star needs no introduction. From action to comedy to drama, Ajay Devgn has done it all, and has been well-appreciated. Still a rage among his fans and friends, Bollywood’s ‘gentleman hero’ talks about his journey since ‘Phool Aur Kaante’ to ‘Singham’.

Growing as an actor
I have been a part of the industry for the past 20 years and it has been a learning experience. I have undoubtedly grown – as an actor, a producer and even as a family man. My sincerity and hard work have been paid richly as I have been successful in whatever character I played. All these years have made me realise that there is no real competition. It should be within you to outdo your last performance, and that’s the rule I follow, both in my professional as well as in personal life. I always compete with myself and in doing so I try to evaluate my drawbacks and improve on it.

On playing different characters
I agree to perform any character only if I like it. But once I have signed on the dotted line, my commitment to the part I play is 100 percent. I put in my sincere efforts in order to make my character on reel look real. If need be, I can go to any extent to get each and every nuances of the role right. In other words, I live the character I play. This may have something to do with my upbringing that has taught me to remain grounded, no matter how much success I achieve.

Crediting the makers
Director Kuku Kohli was the first director who put faith in me. He was the one to coax producer Dinesh bhai (Dinesh Patel) to cast me as a hero in ‘Phool Aur Kaante’. Thank God, the film was a success. Thanks to them and of course the audience who liked the film that I was able to take my next step in the industry. The second film I did with Kuku was ‘Haqeeqat’ (starring Tabu). Of course, here I have to also thank Tabu, because she was a well-known star then and I was a mere newcomer. I couldn’t have asked for a better second start. The film saw me play the quintessential love hero for the first time, and to my luck people loved the new Ajay as well. The film was nominated in all the categories for Screen Awards and with that directors began to see me as a versatile actor and not just another action hero. Mahesh Bhatt, Raj Kumar Santoshi, Rohit Shetty and Prakash Jha were some of the filmmakers who spotted the talent in me and took the risk. Today, I am happy that their gamble paid off.

Prakash Jha a mentor?
He is my godfather in the true sense. We have an amazing understanding, and that could be the reason that whichever role Prakash has given me, I have shined in that. He is an easy director to work with. Working with him I have never felt the pressure, which usually comes when you are experimenting with a different role or a subject. We share a master-student relationship, so whatever he wants to teach, I learn.

On awards
I care for the appreciation. It is the single most important thing that keeps us actors going. There is no award compared to audiences’ appreciation, which is my award too. But yes, being awarded by a jury is also a different high. As long as we get the desired and deserved admiration for the sincere and hard work we put in, we wouldn’t mind doing any kind of roles. It’s our life’s mojo.

On being a part of flop films
I am a professional actor. I do films. But if some of them do not do well at the box office then it is by chance. No one will make or act in a film if he knows it’s going to flop. You see, a hit or a flop is a conspicuous term which allures the audience to come and watch the film. Whether they like the film or not is their personal choice. I did ‘Rascals’ because I felt it was a good comedy film and a pleasant break from doing serious roles.

On working with wife Kajol
If we get a good script then we would be glad to do so. Right now however, there are no such plans.

Ten years from now
(Laughs) I do not care for astrology so how am I to know my future? I believe in living in the present time. This is the reason why I never plan anything. I take life as it comes, and in my stride!

With a captivating smile and as an uniformed officer, R Madhavan charmed the ladies with his small but power packed performance in ‘Rang De Basanti’. His magic continued with films like ‘Guru’, ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘Tanu Weds Manu’.

But now the actor has moved on to light hearted role with ‘Jodi Breakers’. In the film, he plays Sid. Talking about the film, he says, “If there can be agents for marriage, there should be for divorces too. In the film, we don’t create breakups, but try to get the two people apart, who are not satisfied in life. We give them a second chance.”

The film was initially titled as ‘Shaadi Fast Forward’ but the makers settled for ‘Jodi Breakers’, which gave a unique feel to the theme of the film. Paired alongside Bipasha Basu, Madhavan is taken aback by her his co-star’s humility. He says, “In the beginning I was very nervous because she is truly a superstar, very beautiful and charming and I didn’t know what kind of a relationship I would share with her. After working with her, we have become affectionate towards each other. She has never let me feel that she is a very big star. Bips is really kind at heart.”

The tale behind the casting of the film is such that the makers of the film had approached Bipasha two years back, however at that time the actress was busy with other projects. But she was the one who had suggested Maddy’s name for the film. Madhavan seemed delighted with the film, but he wanted to wait for Bips to give a green signal for ‘Jodi Breakers’.

And when all the patience paid off, Madhavan is happy with the outcome. “For that one film I do in a year, it is very important that I get a good co-star. Whenever you have chemistry onscreen then you have to be very attracted to the person. And I am definitely attracted to Bipasha. And when you lack that chemistry it becomes very difficult to portray the romance onscreen,” says Madhavan.

Apart from the lead ‘jodi’ played by Bips and Maddy, the film also stars Omi Vaidya and Dipannita Sharma.

Quick love bites:
1. Try and try till you succeed
2. Fortune favours the brave
3. Next please. Keep moving in life

Eight years of love and a much-hyped breakup, but Bipasha Basu has little to complain about. Officially single and enjoying the status, the ‘Players’ hottie gives us her take on the one thing she will never loose on: love. Says the former model, “For me, love is very important. I think my biggest priority in life is love. And it’s not just the man-woman kind of love, but love for family, friends, work, etc. I can teach everyone the language and lessons of love very well.”

We agree. When Bips and John Abraham were a couple they were always seen hand in hand, complementing each other’s presence at all occasions. But when the relationship went sour, the cracks were clearly visible. And rumours reached a point when talks were such that John refused to work with Bips. But that seems to be a thing of the past as Bipasha says, “I believe that if one relationship doesn’t work out then that is not the end of the world. You have to move on. Like how I am celebrating being single this season.” Bipasha proved it so on her birthday, where she celebrated the day with her girlfriends. And ask her about the benefits of being single and Bips turns diplomatic, “There is a plus to both. If you find your eternal love or soul mate then you are happily in love and a couple. Else you celebrate being yourself.”

Bips describes her Mr Right as her ‘Jodi Breakers’ co-star R Madhavan as she says, “I want a man just like Maddy. He is a fabulous husband and a great friend. He loves to live his life king size, a foodie, and very much into outdoor sports. Maddy loves to travel, and is a very passionate man. But I would obviously want a fitter and younger Maddy.”

All charged up about her next release, ‘Jodi Breakers’, Bips says, “I play Sonali in the film. She is exactly like me, who believes that two people are supposed to be together if only there is love, and if not, to give life another chance go out and find your love.”

Quick love bites:
1. Be truthful
2. Be honest
3. Do everything for the one you love

After giving successful films like ‘Raajneeti’, ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ and such, Katrina Kaif’s dream of being the number one was almost achieved when she signed films opposite the 3 Khans – ‘Dhoom 3’ with Aamir, ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ with ex-beau Salman and Yash Raj’s yet to be titled film opposite SRK.

And while it was the best line up an actress could ask for, what Katrina forgot while signing on the dotted line was the infamous Sallu-SRK ‘dosti’. While the actors are cordial in public, their professional rivalry is common knowledge. Yet, the bravado actress continued to walk the thin line until all hell broke loose at a recent event when SRK kissed Katrina on the cheek. While the actress played party to the ‘show of affection’ too afraid to displease the King Khan, it did annoy the ‘Dabangg’ hero.

An oops moment for the actress, whose most films are still in the process of filming. Which also means that she could be out of at least one project if one particular Khan wishes so, unless some serious damage control is done. Till then, we hope she doesn’t rub off the perfectionist Khan.

He is undoubtedly the most respected and loved actor in Bollywood. And the reason isn’t just the generous person he is in real life, but also the various characters he has impeccably performed on screen. Be it the sacrificing lover in ‘Saajan’, the Robinhood like villain in ‘Khalnayak’, or the gullible Don in ‘Munna Bhai’ series. But the one character that has made the superstar famous, even before the film is released, is that of Kancha Cheena in ‘Agneepath’.

So we caught with the man of the hour itself, to know the experience of the journey from Munna Bhai to the intimidating Kancha. Says the actor, “I immediately agreed to do this film as I liked the character very much. Initially I was shown bald owing to prosthetic, but one fine day I decided to go bald for real. This transformation not only gave the look a real appeal but made me comfortable as well.”

Clearly the effect has been stunning. Even in the trailers Sanjay as Kancha looks like a devil personified. To this the actor says, “I am happy for the look though initially I was shocked for I could not believe myself that this is what makeup techniques can do these days. It could make me look so very fierce. But with the positive feedback coming in, I feel privileged.”

Praising his co-star, Hrithik Roshan, Sanjay says, “Between ‘Mission Kashmir’ and ‘Agneepath’ I’ve literally seen Hrithik improve as an actor and as a performer. His journey from his first film ‘Kaho Naa Pyar Hai’ has been nothing less than spectacular. His hard work is visible through the various characters he has performed on screen. I see lot of dedication in him. He is a focused actor.”

Sanju also waxes eloquence on the new breed of actors swarming the industry. “They are very professional. I belong to the old school of thought where we would respect our elders and learn through the hard work we put in. I do care for anyone and everyone in the unit, be it a spot boy or the producer because my well being is thanks to him. I do care for his well being too because I know he is the one who keeps serving me tea, coffee and food, whenever I need. I have learnt through my parents and seniors that we need to be humble and take care of others to get the same love and care back. Unlike today’s kids, who are concerned only about themselves. But that’s fine as world changes and they have to be following the contemporary style of living. I hail from a background where we were taught to be grounded.”

Talking about working aside ace actor Rishi Kapoor, he says, “Rishi has mind blowing energy. I was astonished to see the energy level that he possesses. He, even at this age, enacts a scene as if it’s his first with great zeal. You will see a very different persona of Rishiji in the film, and you will like it too. He is portrayed very differently.”

Sanjay agrees that he took risks in life. “I remember when I accepted the role of ‘Saajan’ everyone told me that it was a foolish move. People went to the extent of saying, ‘Yeh, kyun ek langade aadmi ka role kr raha hai’ (Why is he doing the role of a crippled). But as an actor I have always tried different characters; unless things are challenging they do not appeal to me. In fact ‘Munna Bhai’ had no sexy sequences neither it had any item number; and yet it was a hit because it was made differently. It had that impact that shook the minds of the audience.”

Elaborating how he gained confidence for enacting different roles, he says, “My father once told me, ‘Whenever you perform in front of anyone – be it a senior actor or a newcomer – you should be able to look into his/her eyes and deliver. This will definitely bring forth the required depth in your performances.’ I have taken this challenge. While performing opposite Dilip (Kumar) uncle in ‘Vidhata’, I just looked into his eyes and performed. All these senior actors did help us perform exuberantly; we were not treated as newcomers. And when it was my turn I followed their example. If Hrithik has appreciated me, he is being humble.”

On performing a difficult character with ease, Sanju smiles and says, “I can perform a character easily because of the talent I have inherited from my mother, Nargis Dutt. Most of the yesteryear technicians profess that my mom would be laughing and joking one minute and the next she will be in the character of the film. Guess that’s the skill, which has been passed on to me.”

On the production front, the actor cum producer has some good projects lined up. But prod him for names and story and Sanju evades the question. “I am still on the scripting level. Nothing much has come up. But I will plan a simple comedy film. I feel films should be made for entertainment value. Messages do crop up in the films. But I am not especially taking care about giving any message. All in all I will love to entertain my audiences,” he says.

On being missed out on awards, Sanjay turns sarcastic and says, “Have I ever performed for any award functions that I will get an award? My award is the appreciation of my fans. They like my films and they love me… this is more than enough for me.” About his being in the politics arena he adds, “I just took a chance and tried my hand at politics. I had to butter Shri Mualayam Singh to take me in. I still remember Amar Singhji told me to stay away from politics. Also I am a very bad orator. I can never give a good ‘bhashan’. But that’s in the past now. At the moment I plan to support my sister MP Priya Dutt in all her political promotional assignments.”

Everyone is aware of the benefits of Yoga thanks to stars like Shilpa Shetty who attributes her healthy body to the age old practice. And now it seems another actor is following in her footsteps. ‘Mission Impossible 4’ actor Anil Kapoor has taken to ‘Bikram Yoga’ like fish to water. The actor who practices it almost every day, whether shooting or otherwise, seems to propagate it as the key of good health “for all men and women”.

But ask the actor what the secret of his youthful look is and he credits daughter, actress Sonam Kapoor. “She was the one introducing me to Yoga and now I seem to be hooked to it. I practice it every day and feel more energetic. Because at the end of the day, good life isn’t about the money and riches, but your health that will allow you to enjoy all that. Plus, I can do it anywhere I want, even on outdoor shoots. I don’t need to carry anything extra or heavy and still can stay healthy.” And young too, we say.

She proved that size zero isn’t the real way to success, even a ‘moti’ can become a star. Vidya Balan’s career can be defined as a spectrum of roles which have shades of bold, emotional and a romantic woman in them. In 2011 she set off with a serious note in ‘No One Killed Jessica’ and ended the year with a sexy biopic act in ‘The Dirty Picture’.

With 2012, Vidya, who played the dotting mother in ‘Paa’ is now back playing a six months pregnant lady in ‘Kahaani’. “I believe that bearing a child is a wonderful experience. My sister just gave birth to twins. It has just added to the motherly feeling I got after doing ‘Kahaani’,” shares Vidya. But the actress refuses to reveal more about the film. ‘Kahaani’ is an emotional journey of an expectant mother who comes to Kolkata in search of her husband. The film is set to release on March 9.

Currently the most dependable actress in tinsel town, Vidya modestly denies the praise. She says, “It is good to get the credit for the success of a film but it is more of a team working together. Behind a super hit movie, there is a lot of team effort.”

She was praised for playing Silk Smitha in ‘The Dirty Picture’. And of late many of her films have been woman centric, but that doesn’t typecast the actress. Vidya says, “Female centric films are always made. They are worming now as the style of presentation has changed. However, I believe in doing a variety of roles and not just woman oriented films. I have not set any limits for myself, so any good offer and I will go for it. Even if there is a male protagonist in the film, I don’t mind taking up the project as long as I have a substantial part to play.” Talks were on that Vidya was approached by Rajnikanth, but she turned down the offer. To this the actress says, “Well it is not true. Whenever I get an offer I shall think about it.”

Vidya is ranked as one of the top most actresses in Bollywood with all the variety of roles she has played. She says, “Well it is a mystery with all these successes. I am glad that I have got the opportunity to enact different characters onscreen. I am simply taking advantage and I believe that I am fortunate enough to have got so many good projects. I hope that I get to do more films with good directors.”

But it’s never been all rosy for Vidya. The actress has faced quite a few downs like ‘Heyy Babyy’ and ‘Halla Bol’. “Many call them as mistakes, but I consider them as learning experiences. They have been an important part, without them I would not have reached where I am right now,” says Vidya.

Clearing the air on the rumours about the actress hiking her fees, Vidya says, “All the actresses have different places in the industry. So I don’t think in that competitive manner. For me, films are beyond the monetary factor. It is more than money for me. Having said that I would like to add, when it comes to money, more is indeed merrier and welcomed.”

Ask her if she is ready to tie the knot with boyfriend Siddharth Roy Kapoor and Vidya quips, “I feel my career is going on a good track. I am happy with the emotional and mental space of mine. I do believe in the institution of marriage but I am not prepared for it now. Yes, I know that I am avoiding it but that won’t be for too long.”

Recently there was news that Vidya and Siddharth had narrowly escaped an earthquake in New Zealand while she does confirm her lucky escape, but terms the news as ‘dramatised’ and dismisses any questions about the man in her life.

Divya Dutta isn’t the usual heroine material. A versatile actress with an infectious smile, she has charmed the audiences time and again with her stunning performances. ‘Welcome to Sajjanpur’ and ‘Aaja Nachle’ have been some of the actress’ outstanding performances. Her role in ‘Veer Zaara’ got her the Zee Cine Awards, while ‘Delhi 6′ brought her the IIFA trophy. Nominated twice for the National Award, Divya turns candid as she talks about her journey thus far.

Having carved a niche for herself, Divya is one face to be seen in several films. At the moment she is busy with Vikram Bhatt’s ‘Dangerous Ishq’, where she plays a parallel character to Karisma Kapoor, who is making her comeback with the film. Talking about her role in the movie, Divya says, “I am doing a parallel lead along Karisma. I have a very intricate and interesting role. I will have four births in the movie, so different roles with distinct looks. I feel it is nice to have a different look each time, I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.” Praising her co-star, Divya adds, “Karisma is very hardworking, kind and brilliant. She never complains and is very friendly. We have done some nice sequences and had a blast on the sets.” This kind of comradeship is impressive considering that Divya had lost her National Award for ‘Train to Pakistan’ to Karisma Kapoor for ‘Dil Toh Pagal Hai’.

Quiz her on the rumours about Karisma’s request to watch Divya’s part pre-release and the seasoned performer says, “I am unaware of it. I don’t think Karisma should be insecure about my role in the film. It is more of her comeback film and I have just added to her performance. We have the mutual understanding so there would be no such thing.”

Interestingly, Divya is also working with Lolo’s sister Kareena Kapoor in ‘Heroine’. Divya says, “I cannot reveal much about the film, but I would take the opportunity to say that I am the most integral part of the story. A character which matters a lot and whose presence in the film will make a huge difference. And that is what excites me about the movie. I am glad that I got the opportunity to work with Madhur. I always wanted to work with him. And the audience will surely get to see me in a bold avatar but with a difference.” But ask Divya to describe the two sisters – Lolo and Bebo – and she quips, “It is my first time with both of them. I feel that Karisma is a stunner; while Kareena is spontaneous and endearing.”

Besides ‘Dangerous Ishq’ and ‘Heroine’, Divya will also be seen in Vikramaditya Motwane’s ‘Lootera’ with Mallika Sherawat and Irrfan Khan as co-stars; and ‘Zilla Ghaziabad’, “Where I have done a lot of action. It was not originally a part of the movie but seeing my work, the makers decided to extend my role.”
